Preparation Steps

1 onion, diced
1-2 garlic cloves, grated
1 tsp ginger, grated
Heat some oil in a pan and fry the onions. Once soft, add the grated garlic and grated ginger and fry until the raw taste fades. Set the fried aromatics aside.

2-3 cups of rice
Wash/rinse the rice 3 times or until the water runs clear. Drain the water.

200ml coconut milk
Add the coconut milk to the washed rice and fill up with water until it passes the finger test (around 300ml total liquid).

½ tsp salt
1.5 tsp turmeric
Fried onions, garlic and ginger (from Step 1)
Optional: 1 knot of pandan leaves
Add the salt, turmeric, fried aromatics (onions, garlic, ginger), and optional pandan leaves to the rice and mix. Cook the rice in a rice cooker or in a pan.

Thai basil or cilantro
Cut the Thai basil or cilantro into fine stripes and use as a garnish when serving the rice.
